Metal Ion Crosslinking Modulator for Gel Control

In high-temperature oil reservoirs (6090 °C), standard polymer gels often set too fast, risking near-wellbore damage and short effective plugging life. Our Metal Ion Crosslinking Modulator solves this with a dual-action design: it delays gel formation for deeper penetration and strengthens the final gel network for long-term stability.

 

How It Works

 

This modulator blends three functional components:

 

- Chelating Agent (e.g., HEDP salt, ATMP salt): Weakly coordinates with Cr³⁺, Al³⁺, or Zr⁴⁺ ions, slowing their reaction with polyacrylamide (HPAM). Extends gelation time from ~3060min to 25h at 70 °C enough for deep injection into high-permeability zones.

- Gel Stabilizer (e.g., tannic acid derivative, sodium alginate, modified lignosulfonate): Forms hydrogen bonds with HPAM chains and traps trace Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ that cause degradation. Reduces syneresis (dewatering) and maintains plugging strength.

- Dispersant/Buffer (e.g., sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate): Ensures stable mixing and prevents premature precipitation.

Typical Application Recipe

 

- HPAM (hydrolysis degree 20%30%): 0.3%0.6%

- CrCl₃·6HO (or equivalent metal crosslinker): 0.05%0.15%

At 70 °C, gelation occurs in 25hours, allowing deep penetration into highpermeability channels before rigid gel forms.
