Enhanced Repair of aged paper-[N-Methylol Acrylamide 98%]

Paper, as the main carrier of paper cultural relics, is the treasure of human civilization, inheriting and recording the history, culture and spiritual civilization of the Chinese nation. In recent years, due to disrepair, natural aging, moth-eaten mildew, a large number of paper has appeared serious acidification, aging, yellowing brittle and even comminuted phenomenon. The protection and restoration of paper cultural relics with paper as the carrier has been paid attention to, but the restoration of paper from the root is less, it is difficult to really extend its service life.Existing conservation and restoration work mainly focuses on deacidification process, and relatively few studies on reinforcement. The existing reinforcement repair methods may cause damage to the paper structure, or change the macroscopic morphology of the paper, or accelerate the aging of the paper, and rely on manual, can not be mass reinforcement repair.

According to the aging mechanism of paper and the main factors affecting the strength of paper, combined with the current situation of aging paper and the requirements for the restoration of paper cultural relics,Ultrasonic atomization method is used to transport the atomized micron grade reinforcing agent to the inside of the paper at a very low speed, to ensure that the paper slowly and fully absorb the reinforcing agent, as far as possible to avoid the deformation of the paper, and can be used for mass reinforcement repair.N-hydroxymethylacrylamide as a paper enhancer is a monomer with good water solubility and chemical reactivity.Through the cross-linking reaction between N-Methylol Acrylamide and paper fiber and its self-crosslinking polymerization products fill the space between paper fibers, improve the bond strength between paper fibers, and realize the reinforced repair of paper.

NMA was used in the strengthening repair of electrostatic copy paper by ultrasonic atomization method, and the influence of atomization absorption, enhancer concentration, atomization rate and drying temperature on the strengthening effect of electrostatic copy paper was explored. And the changes of macroscopic morphology, microscopic surface structure, surface element content and internal chemical groups of the paper before and after reinforcement.

The macroscopic morphology of the paper did not change significantly after the enhanced restoration, which verified that NMA could successfully realize the enhanced restoration of paper without causing secondary damage, so it can be used for the enhanced restoration of precious ancient books such as aging paper. After artificial aging, the physical properties of N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide enhanced paper are better than those of untreated paper, especially the tensile index and tearing index have more stable performance; The analysis of infrared spectrum shows that the characteristic peaks of hydrogen bond are more stable in the aging process of reinforced repaired paper. The addition of NMA protects the bond between paper fibers to a certain extent.
