In 1931, American chemist Adskins realized the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol for the first time with copper chromic acid as catalyst, and found that the by-product was mainly the product of deep hydrogenation of furfuran ring and aldehyde group, and the selectivity of the product could be improved by changing the reaction temperature and catalytic reaction conditions. According to different reaction conditions, the process of furfural hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol can be divided into liquid phase method and gas phase method, which can be divided into high pressure method (9.8MPa) and medium pressure method (5 ~ 8MPa).

liquid phase hydrogenation

Liquid phase hydrogenation is to suspend the catalyst in furfural at 180 ~ 210℃, medium pressure or high pressure hydrogenation, the device is an empty tower reactor. In order to reduce the heat load, the addition rate of furfural was often controlled and the reaction time (greater than 1h) was prolonged. Due to the backmixing of materials, hydrogenation reaction can not stay in the step of furfuryl alcohol generation, and can further produce byproducts such as 22 methylfurfuran and tetrahydrofurfuran alcohol, which leads to high raw material consumption, and difficult to recover waste catalyst, easy to cause serious chromium pollution. In addition, the liquid phase method needs to be operated under pressure, which requires higher equipment requirements. At present, this method is mainly used in our country. High reaction pressure is the main shortcoming of the liquid-phase method. However, the production of furfuryl alcohol by liquid-phase reaction under low pressure (1 ~ 1.3MPa) has been reported in China, and high yield has been obtained.

As one of the raw materials for organic synthesis, it can be used to produce levulinic acid, furan resin with various properties, furfuryl alcohol-urea resin and phenolic resin. The cold resistance of plasticizers made from it is better than that of Butanol and Octanol esters. It is also good solvents for furan resins, varnishes, and pigments, and rocket fuels. In addition, it is also used in synthetic fibers, rubber, pesticides and foundry industries.
